Werner Escher, executive director of domestic and international markets at South Coast Plaza, passed away on January 6 at the age of 85. Escher has been credited with helping to transform the shopping center, located in Costa Mesa, California, into a luxury destination. He was the recipient of the 2013 CalTravel F. Norman Clark Tourism Champion of the Year award, which honored his five decades of innovative marketing with South Coast Plaza and the tourism industry.
“Werner was not only a tourism industry visionary, he was a one-of a kind colleague and friend, and will be greatly missed,” CalTravel said in a statement.
Plans for a public memorial service are pending. South Coast Plaza management is currently accepting cards, which will be forwarded to Escher’s family.
