The all new Cobo Center

A brand new Cobo Center debuted in downtown Detroit after a five-year, $279 million transformation. Along with new ballrooms, exhibit space, and revamped hi-tech meeting rooms, the venue debuted an entirely upgraded look showcasing the center’s prime waterfront location. With a dramatic, 30,000 square foot, three-story glass atrium serving as a focal point, this stunning new atrium, located just inside the main entrance, gives attendees clear views of the majestic Detroit River and adds a seamless connection from the main hall to the lower-level exhibition area.

Upon arriving at Cobo Center, convention attendees immediately notice the facility’s new look. The primary façade facing downtown is glass-enclosed to open up the space to the city, and a new, 120’x30’ programmable LED full function digital sign creates a platform to promote events and welcome guests to the new Cobo Center. Other exterior upgrades include an entrance to a Detroit-Made themed food court, as well as a new entrance into the atrium and lower-level convention space. Previously considered an afterthought, the renovated 100,000-square-foot lower-level show floor, along with the addition of 23,000 square feet on the first level, increases Cobo Center’s current capability to host more than 95 percent of the world’s largest conventions.

The Cobo Arena, once a premier sports and entertainment venue, finds new life as the region’s newest banquet and event space in this renovation. Equipped with a lift stage for dramatic introductions, the arena was repurposed into a 40,000-square-foot Grand Riverview Ballroom, complemented by glass-enclosed, pre-function space and an open-air terrace, both overlooking the Detroit River and the skyline of Windsor, Ontario. Meeting planners can utilize newly configured meeting rooms in the south side of the facility that have been upgraded with programmable video message boards outside each room. And to further take advantage of Cobo’s riverside location, high-efficiency glass walls have replaced most of the exterior walls facing the river to let in more natural light and fabulous views.

Technology upgrades in Cobo Center enhance the customer experience with facility-wide, high speed, free WiFi Internet connections. The Washington Boulevard and Congress Street corner of Cobo Center has a new 2,800 square foot exterior digital sign, creating revenue streams for events that sell promotions and advertisements. A first floor TV production studio offers satellite uplink, extensive, facility-wide fiber network, and full production sound stage to broadcast your event live. The Cobo website offers online event service ordering and payment, webcast hosting, detailed event schedule pages, an expanded pressroom and social media updates.
Certified as the ninth convention center in the United States to achieve the Green Meetings Industry Council ASTM/APEX standard, Cobo offers comprehensive Green Event support to customers. Aggressive recycling and energy conservation measures are monitored and reported during events by the Cobo Center Green Committee, whose members include every department and vendor company housed in the center. A wide variety of Green initiative materials for event use are linked to the website.

In 2010, SMG was contracted to manage operations, and new rules, new rates, new attitudes became the drumbeat for the newly reinvented Cobo Center. The Motor City is no stranger to exceeding expectations, and Cobo Center is no exception. With this new asset, Detroit — a former two-time host to the Super Bowl and stronghold of American work ethic — is now set to become a global leader for hosting more world-class conventions, meetings, and events than ever before.
